All of the evidence tells us that if we increase efforts to improve earlier presentation and diagnosis of cancer, it will save thousands of lives every year. Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network recognise that a key part of this work is harnessing the potential of staff and asked Unique Improvements to support the development of a social marketing resource.
We have built this resource to help staff raise awareness of cancer symptoms and develop their confidence in supporting clients and patients. We used social marketing principles and techniques to guide the work. This was important because staff, just like the wider public, might at first find this task an emotive and daunting experience. We explored what moves and motivates staff to raise awareness of cancer symptoms as well as finding out how to support easy and role specific ways of putting it into practice.
The result is a practical and flexible set of guidelines and tools to help staff contribute to this crucial work. Kathy Elliott (National Awareness and Early Diagnosis lead from the Department of Health) will be speaking at the Launch Event on February 9th which is bringing around 200 hundred stakeholders together to plan how they can spread the work across their own workplaces. A great deal of interest (including internationally) has been shown in adapting the resource.
