The challenge:

Government policy, including the recent Darzi Reports, place Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) at the heart of NHS activity. It is crucial to becoming a world-class commissioner and provider, transforming services and creating healthier communities.

An NHS Provider Service Organisation commissioned us to develop an overarching involvement strategy that could be applied to all service areas and plans.

Our approach:

We developed an ambitious organisational wide programme of activity which included a mapping and scoping stage, establishing a knowledge resource, training and industrialising Patient and Public Involvement across every day work.

We used an assets based approach. This meant using existing skills and practice as a starting point to support staff to work together, share solutions and develop confidence. We used innovative ways to engage staff such as ‘talking head’ short video clips which allowed clinician to speak to clinician. An ‘Experts on the Ground Event’ brought staff together to launch the work, develop ownership and map current and planned practice.

We created resources and systems which would involve and support staff. A varied training programme was delivered across the organisation, targeting staff to develop confidence and practical skills. Bespoke support was provided to service teams and links made across organisational priorities.
